Please consider contributing to our initiative of raising a strong voice against Yulin Dog Meat festival by sharing this post and raise an awareness. This contribution doesn't involve any donation and crowfunding.

Across the world wide web there have been talks on on the infamous Yulin Dog Meat festival, the 10 days annual celebration held in Yulin, Guangxi, China, during the summer solstice, where the festival goers eat dog meat. Several thousands of dogs that are rounded up to be eaten, include all types of dogs starting from poor strays to stolen house hold pets .

A festival cannot be an event of cruelty. Such events should be abolished completely.

It is immensely appreciable that in 2011, Jinhua Hutou Dog Meat Festival in Zhejiang, which was another popular festival, was completely banned by the local government. Good news is that the sale of dog meat in Yulin have come down by 60% in 2014 from the previous year. Several dog meat restaurants in some cities have closed down. But this needs to come to a complete end.

This appeal is not only in the interest animal welfare, but also in the interest of public health and food safety as the same time.

Our earnest request to Mr. Chen Wu, the Governor of Guangxi Autonomous Region and Mr. Peng Qinghua, the Guangxi Communist Party of China Chief to kindly consider putting a permanent end to this cruelty.

Thanksgiving is a holiday that’s all about food, family, and fun. However, the time leading up the big feast tends to be busy and stressful. There’s so much to think about and plan for, and it’s easy to forget things in the midst of it all. One thing you should never forget to consider is the safety of your beloved pets. If you have a dog, there are several things to watch out for during Thanksgiving. Utilizing the best dog fence to keep them contained, decorating with caution, and making sure your dog doesn’t get any turkey bones are just some of the things that can prevent unfortunate incidents. Let’s explore these tips and more in-depth.

Keep Your Dog Out of the Kitchen

When there is a lot of activity going on in the kitchen, accidents are more common. To keep everyone safe, it’s best if you don’t let your dog near you while prepping and cooking. Your dog’s sudden movements can cause someone to trip, for example, and sharp knives and hot foods can cause serious injuries. If possible, keep your dog in a closed room or crate. Another possibility is to block their access to the kitchen with a barrier. A baby gate would work, and a portable wireless dog fence is also an option. An invisible dog fence barrier has the added benefit of not blocking the path for you or your guests.

Be Wary of Hazards While Traveling

If you’re traveling this year and bringing your dog with you, take some extra precautions to ensure their safety on the road and in new places. For example, your dog should be wearing a special dog seat belt while in the car. At the very least, your dog should be contained in a crate, so that they can’t get into the front seat and risk distracting whoever is driving. At your relative’s house, keep an eye out for cleaning chemicals, fertilizer, medications, and other hazards that might be in reach of your dog. Always bring along the telephone number to your vet’s office, as well as your dog’s vaccination records and any medications they take, just in case.

Be Careful When Feeding Your Dog

The safest thing to do on Thanksgiving is not share any of your meal with your dog. While they may beg and whine because it smells so good, your dog doesn’t know what’s best for them. Turkey skin can actually cause pancreatitis, for example, and turkey bones can pierce your dog’s intestines, stomach, or throat. Chocolate is toxic to dogs, and so is the sugar substitute xylitol. Onions are also bad for dogs, and so are coffee, tea, and alcohol. Your dog could choke on small things like raisins, grapes, or nuts. If you want your dog to enjoy something special on Thanksgiving, purchase them some dog treats beforehand.

Know How to Recognize Signs of Stress

The hustle and bustle of the holidays can be particularly stressful for dogs, especially if they’re not accustomed to being around a lot of noise or people. When dogs get stressed out, their body language will tell you. Look out for signals such as hiding, cowering, shaking, freezing up, growling, panting, showing the whites of their eyes, and raised fur. If your dog starts exhibiting these signs, they need some quiet time away from the action. Either in a closed room or with an electric dog fence, create a “safe zone” for them with as little noise as possible, toys, food, and plenty of water, so they can de-stress.

Ensure Your Dog’s Environment is Safe

There are several environmental hazards that you might not automatically think about during the holidays, particularly when you’re decorating your house. Corn stalks and pumpkins look festive, and they may also smell tasty to dogs. However, chunks of raw corn and pumpkins are hard to digest. They can cause your dog to choke, or they can lead to dangerous blockages in the intestines. Keep them out-of-reach, along with any lit candles your dog could knock over. Also be careful with cooking items like aluminum foil, plastic wrap, twine, and cheesecloth. Make sure all trash from your meal is put in the garbage outside immediately.

Tell Relatives to Be Cautious, Too

It’s smart to talk to your relatives about dog safety during the holidays, too. They should be told, for example, not to feed your dog anything off their plates, and not to leave their plates or drinks unattended. Don’t forget to talk to young children, too, and remind them not to hug or kiss dogs. If you’re using an electronic dog fence as a barrier for your kitchen, make sure your relatives know it’s in place, so they don’t try to bring your dog across it. Ask your relatives to inform you if they notice any weird behavior from your dog, or if they see your dog eating table food.

As long as you observe these simple tips, you’ll greatly reduce the chances that your dog will experience any injury or illness during the holiday. Thanksgiving should be enjoyed, not stressed over, and keeping all of your loved ones in mind - including your pets - will ensure everyone has a fulfilling, safe holiday. Happy Thanksgiving!
If chimpanzees can why can't humans?

Researchers have spent years studying the unique behavior in chimpanzee, and have come up with a conclusion that chimpanzees have tendencies to cooperate with others within their community. This was for the first time ever, that this group of researchers have discovered that chimpanzees that have been captivated in a socially complex set up have shown spontaneous cooperation with their partners of their own choices, and that too without any training and socialization. However, the researchers, Yerkes National Primate Research Center, Emory University, had created no constraints for the chimpanzees to choose their own partner(s).

The team leader Malini Suchak, PhD said, "Cooperation among primates has attracted considerable research because of the evolutionary implications that such research has for human behavior and the ubiquity of cooperation among wild primates". She also said: "Cooperation is often regarded as less puzzling than altruistic behavior, but only in an evolutionary sense. In the moment, cooperation often consists of a series of potentially complex decisions involving a choice of partners. When multiple partners are available, an individual must consider with whom to cooperate, if that individual has been a good partner previously, how much to invest in the partner, what to expect in return and if the cooperation will yield more benefits than solitary effort".

During the study, Suchak's team discovered that the chimpanzees cooperated around 3565 time over the course of 94 on-hour study sessions, where chimpanzees were critically observed while they mingle with each other, and especially with their chosen partners. Most interestingly, according to the researchers, the frequency, efficiency and the rate of success of cooperation were found to have been enhanced eventually over time. Alongside the cooperation tendencies, the team also discovered that that frequency of pulling incedences in the absence of a partner had gradually diminished. This concluded that the chimpanzees had eventually understood that they a partner is always needed for success.

Suchak's study was initiated with 11 members of a chimpanzee social group, her team mates Frans de Waal, PhD, Matt Campbell, PhD, and Tim Eppley and the chimpanzees, being well looked after and captivated in a huge alfresco enclosure, creating a socially complex environment for those animals that could move around without any barrier. The specialty of the outcome of this study is that it typically explored various levels of female cooperation, all of which, according to the researchers, will aid by offering better insight on the evolution of cooperative behavior.

As a conclusion Sichak stated that since the previous research that she and her team had carried out could only elicit cooperation in a restricted setting, they thought that "more complex and cooperative behavior might have uniquely evolved in humans". Suchak concluded: "This study demonstrates chimpanzees are more cooperative than we realized, and we've yet to fully explore the extent of the similarities between chimpanzee and human behavior in this regard".Aringsburghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06294967059097346197noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6188878197511797395.post-89771940236109388112013-09-08T23:53:00.000-07:002013-09-08T23:53:57.336-07:00India Outlaws Captive Dolphin Shows and Importing Them For EntertainmentIndia is the world's fourth nation that banned catching and importing cetaceans for commercial entertainment. Other countries are Costa Rica, Hungary and Chile. India Government has been influenced by the outcome of the research on dolphins that established that these creature are highly intelligent and very sensitive. The government has taken a decision to close all dolphin parks in India.

Puja Mitra from the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organizations (FIAPO) in this context said, "the scientific evidence we provided during the campaign talked about cetacean intelligence and introduced the concept of non-human persons," she added, "the majority of dolphins and whales in captivity have been sourced through wild captures in Japan, in Taiji, in the Caribbean, in the Solomon Islands and parts of Russia. These captures are very violent"

It is really a great news that India's Government has given dolphins a status of “non-human personhood”, making the country unique in the way the people there thinks about the endangered species like dolphins. The decision of granting dolphins the status of “non-human personhood” was officially announced by India’s Minister of the Environment and Forests. The government outlawed captive dolphin shows and the ministry said that dolphins “should have their own specific rights.”Aringsburghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06294967059097346197noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6188878197511797395.post-9133236838647907152013-06-03T03:27:00.000-07:002013-06-03T03:27:31.455-07:00Initiative to save Indian Elephants - London London, Monday, May 27:

Two life-size Indian elephants statues have been installed in Sloane Street, London to flag the launch of the awareness program and the initiative to save India elephants. A charity - 'Elephant Family' founded by Mark Shand, the well known travel writer and conservationist collaborated with another London charity Habitat Humanity for the Animal Ark programme with a noble motive to raise funds that would be used to save Indian elephants.

Shand said that "the two beautiful floral elephants" in the Sloane Street of London indicated the huge "Animal Ark" that they are going to build the coming year - 2014. As a part of the Animal Ark program they will bring in 100 pairs of distinctive species of animals and each of them will be auctioned to raise the funds for protecting the endangered Asian elephants.

"We have cleared the Nilgiri corridor and are now moving to a smaller corridor in Assam. In India, a person kills an elephant and vice versa every single day now as the traditional migratory routes are blocked leading to conflict... Our project with Habitat for Humanity involves building homes for people to clear these corridors. It is a win-win situation for everybody...", said Shand. Over 2013 and 2014, the activities of Elephant Family and Habitat for Humanity include raising awareness about Indian elephants and helping communities to resettle beyond the danger area. Most interestingly the program also includes restoring the paths that have been in use by the Asian elephants for migration for millions of years.

One of the sponsors of the initiative Viscount Chelsea, chair of Cadogan Estates Limited said, "to see these life-size elephants decked out with flowers by (florists) Wild At Heart on an iconic fashion street of London like Sloane Street is a first".Aringsburghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06294967059097346197noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6188878197511797395.post-15063668253023330432013-03-01T10:19:00.000-08:002014-06-13T05:15:49.685-07:00Callous Act of Stabbing Staffordshire Bull Terrier To Death<http: www.dogtrainingcollars.com="">Quite recently in February, 2013 the news of a man stabbing a pet bull terrier to death created a buzz amidst the dog lovers’ community across the globe.

The man - Terence Micheal Renton, 31, of showed his insanely wild behavior by killing a bull terrier – a pet dog after his mother complained that she had been given a bad scare by some dog of the same breed (Staffordshire Bull Terrier). Her son – Renton started looking for a dog of the same breed in the locality and went on asking people if they had seen a Staffordshire Bull Terrier in that region, and was told that a dog of the breed he was looking for was kept fenced in the nearby garden. Renton who was armed with a knife, went into the premise and stabbed the dog in the neck and the poor dog died from just a single fierce stab.
People who had witnessed the incidence were shocked and called the cops and the RSPCA. Hannah Bryer, the RSPCA inspector said, "To inflict any physical harm or violence on any animal is inexcusable but to intentionally go out with a view to harm an animal and cause its death is a cold, calculated and callous act of cruelty."

Sever Penal Action Taken Against Terence Micheal Renton

The man pleaded guilty to causing serious harm to an animal that had been kept protected. A severe penal action has been taken against Renton and he has been put behind the bar for 6 months. According to the magistrates his act has been described as "cruelty of the gravest gravity". Moreover, Renton has been banned from keeping any animal throughout his life. The criminal will not be allowed to appeal the order for 15 years. In this context Hannah Bryer of RSPCA said, "I am pleased the court has recognised the serious nature of this type of offending and has also imposed a lifelong disqualification order from keeping animals."

More Incidences Of Inhuman Acts On Dogs

Renton’s is not the only case of inhuman conduct to animals. There have been series of similar incidences that have been traced in the different parts of the world. Rescued by Scottish SPCA Sheila, a Staffordshire bull terrier, had been shot15 times by her owner with an airgun. Another incidence of a Staffordshire bull terrier being burned to death by his owner was reported in Peebles. One more incidence was reported in Brechin, Angus by Scottish SPCA, where a dog was fastened to a barbed wire fence and was made to starve till he was dead. Yet another incidence… the beloved dog (Lucky) of a Henderson man was firstly poisoned and secondly, was fed sewing needles along with the food with intent to kill him.

Botswana an Zambia used to be the most premier wildlife destinations. The Governments have banned trophy hunting of big cats in Botswana and Zambia. Late, but both Zambia and Botswana are now aiming at promoting Ecotourism. The rapid and shocking decline in the population of lions and leopards has been a big loss, affecting the ecosystem adversely. This encouraged the government to stop issuance of hunting licenses from January, 2013.

According to Zambia's tourism ministry game-viewing tourism was more valuable than blood sport, which brought in just $3m (£1.9m) last year. Tourism and Arts Minister Sylvia Masebo told Reuters, "tourists come to Zambia to see the lion and if we lose the lion we will be killing our tourism industry". However, on the contrary according to Chuma Simukonda from the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) said that that ban would be harmful for tourism. Chuma's words are really ear assaulting, especially when the world is on a move to save life. Chum should understand that ecotourism can generate more revenue and can add real value to wilderness through creating more scopes for employment . It is important to spread the awareness; Chum should be proud for his precious wildlife.
Neighbouring Botswana committed that they are going to ban all kind of hunting on 2014 and onwards. Kenya has already made a halt to sport hunting for years ago.

It really feels nice to think that Africa has realized their wildlife is actually a global treasure. Banning of hunting lions and cats in is a highly appreciable step of African Governments.
Crate training is an important part, and probably one of the most critical of training types. If not introduced correctly and training strategies not implemented properly crate training may breed behavioral issues like separation anxiety that can end up with nightmare for both you and your dog. Here's what makes a crate aversive to a puppy.

Enforcement: The act of enforcing the crate habit in your dog will eventually make the crate aversive. Forcing a puppy or a dog to enter the crate is considered as an abusive training method.

Too Small Space: Too scant space really cannot make room enough to teach your puppy to stay in the crate when desired. Your dog will feel jailed in the crate - especially when the space is too small and lack of air circulation.

Comfort factors: It is important to make your dog feel that a crate is his/ her private place and a comfort zone, where he/she can repose in peace and spend some quality personal time. At least his blanket and his favorite toy should be made available in the crate. This will keep away frustration.

Feel of Punishment: Once the dog starts considering a crate as a tool for punishment, the crate will become highly repulsive for him.

Crating Your Dog For Too Long Time: Crating your dog for too long time is torture to the animal. It is important to release your dog at least once in ever one-two hours.
If used on a dog that has not been trained properly can even claim life within a second chance. If used by an inexperienced handler the choke chains can lead to serious injury.

Records have shown evidences of canine injuries due to the misuse of choke and prong chains. Serious choke/ link chain injuries such as oesophageal damage, tracheal injuries, ocular vessels injuries, necks sprain, laryngeal nerve paralysis, misalignment of the cervical vertebrae, horner's Syndrome, transient foreleg paralysis and hind leg ataxia etc. have been documented in the veterinary record in March 1999.

The Kennel Club and RSPCA, however, still considers the choke chains as legal training tool – provided they are used by "experienced handlers". This policy, by itself sounds vague, because there's no parameter to count the experience of a handler. Most significantly accident can happen at any point of time even though they are used by experienced people.

Electronic dog training collar, however, has proved to be quite humane and a thousand times safer than the prong and choke chains. The device works on a static stimulation system. The dog gets a static stimulation by a device attached to the collar. The device is operated by the trainer by a remote transmitter. One pressing the button of the transmitter the device generates a static stimulation or an ultrasonic beep upon which your dog is trained to act.
First off... it is your fault because you have not been able to socialize your dog to different situations, sounds and sights. However, the non-abusive dog bark collar has come up with a solution and acts as one of the most effective Temperament Teaching System. It is a simple device that works on sound impact sensor for detecting the sound vibration of the bark of the dog that wears the collar. This device has been designed to address the mad barking behavior of individual dog.

The device works in three simple phases:

First – It detects the sound sound vibration of the dog's bark, as soon as the dog that wears the collar bark.

Second – As soon as the sensor detects the vibration, it delivers a corrective ultrasonic beep that is perceived by the dog in question

Third - The dog stops barking as soon as the dog hears the irritating ultrasonic sound

Following phases are used by the trainers to teach the dog to bark or to stop barking on command. The trainer knows that the dog is going to stop barking, because the dog bark collar is worn round his neck. So, as soon as the dog starts barking, deliver a command 'NO' (which acts as the corrective command as the ultrasonic sound) firmly and the dog will stop barking – not because of your command but because the device's corrective beep. Once your dog stops barking reward him with his favorite tidbits and praise him lavishly. This lets him know that it pleases when he stops barking and he gets the reward. Repetitive practices with consistency will eventually correct the bad barking behavior.
If you have ever loved a dog, I sure you have been showered by million-fold return. I have come across thousands of dog owners, but a few - just a few of them have exhibited responsible ownership.

Owning a dog is a lot easier than being a responsible owner. Not training him or not providing him the right kind of nutrition can save you some dollars instantly, but can claim a huge loss in future. It is important to fence your dog's yard. Physical fencing is preferred over the electronic fencing system, but many dog owners cannot meet the expense involved in installing a physical fence. A hi-tech wifi dog fencing system is however a great alternative for an expensive traditional fence.

An wifi dog fence works in the same way as the traditional enclosure, by creating a virtual boundary that you set. Whenever you dog tries to out pass the boundary, an automatic warning beep alerts the dog. The entire system is controlled automatically through a device that is set to monitor your dog’s movement based on the maximum the range that you set.

However, there are certain limitations of a wifi fencing system:

This hi-tech containment system may not work for you if:

1) Your dog is not fence trained - Proper fence training is a must for optimum success
2) Your dog's yard is beyond the wifi signal range - DIY Dog Fence system works best in yards not more than 100 acres.
3) Minimum yard size or dimension of the dog's yard is too large - The yard must be near to the power outlet

For many decades of the 20 th century whale fishers have been hunting these marine giants for meat, whale bones, whale blubbers or bone flour. Eventually, the number of whale individuals significantly declined and many species found themselves on the verge of extinction. As an example, blue whales might be provided. Recent estimations of their population cannot find a common dominator; some claim that there up to 2 thousand blue whales in the World Ocean, others point out 15 thousand whales distributed over Northern and Southern hemispheres. In particular, blue whales are considered the crown jewel of the Atlantic Ocean, especially northern areas.

Blue whales are recognized as the biggest mammals on the Earth. The average weight is nearly 100-120 tones, which corresponds to a value of 40 African elephants. To support normal living a whale should consume 1 million calories per day that is usually comprised of krill (1 tone). Speaking of meal culture, it is impossible not to mention its peaceful nature, as far as blue whales are typical planktotrophics, which makes the situation with their extinction more sorrowful and distressing.

The other peculiar feature worth underlining is a specific way of communication between individuals. It is associated with whale songs, which are recognized by individuals on the distance of 1600 km. They are often observed during reproduction period, underlining the connection to family functions of mammals. This fact has alerted an attention of scientists and zoologists, dealing with gathering some facts about blue whales.

To be more précised, scientific interest is one out of two issues, which allow whales’ hunting. The other one is necessities of indigenous people in whale hunting. As a source of food it is not forbidden for the indigenous peoples of Alaska, the Far Eastern regions of Russia and Greenland, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Meat was the prime purpose of animals’ population decline; in particular, an adult blue whale individual can give about 40 tons of meat. The statistics concludes that during the 20 the century the number of whales decreased in 100 times.

However, hunting is not the only reason of blue whales disappearance. In this context, clashes with seacrafts are getting more and more serious. The average number of whale deaths from marine vessels is 1,2 accidents per year, but there are also true record years; for example, in 2007 4 fatal encounters occurred in the Pacific Ocean. Gulf of Saint Lawrence is also a region, where blue whales get lots of
injuries. According to marine observations the number of whales suffering from scars and wounds reaches 9-25%. The other negative effect sea vessels perform is a disturbance of echolocation abilities of whales. Voice signals are often silenced, which makes the communication and shoals’ formation almost impossible. It also influences on blue whales’ number within waters of the World Ocean.
It is hence we are here to speak for them, and we expect you too will do so to raise your voice against cruelty to animals. You cannot expect your society to get really humane until it becomes a social responsibility to care for animals. It is important to familiarize yourself with the state's legal things related to animal abuse. However, it is equally important to recognize the signs of abusive behavior towards animals. But it is more than important to realize that this planet is for all - from the most intelligent human beings to a caterpillar.

The signs of cruelty towards animals have been going unnoticeable to many of us. While direct attack or killing of domesticated and street animals and animals in the wild are doubtless signs of animal abuse and cruelty, being negligent and irresponsible towards animals at home or outside is also reported as alleged animal cruelty. All animals deserve kindness and a loving touch. If your child is not mistreated and starved, Rover should not be trained to fight, bashed, euthanized or just neglected for dead. It is a keen request from us not to use animals as bait or for gambling on. It's not a humane act to set a rat on fire or skin a tortoise alive or hit a snake to death. Let our animals breath as long as the nature allows them.

Killing or abusing animals signifies emotional disorder or personality flaw in specific humans that indicates a sign of deep mental disturbance. studies in the fields of psychology and criminology have shown that people committing to the inhumane acts of abusing animals or killing them do not stop there; many of them have exhibited the tendencies of murdering humans. Researches have shown that kids with violent behavior towards pets or small animals intruding their yards usually develop violent psychopathological problems that do not remain confined to animals only. Eventually they start showing abusive tendencies to the fellow classmates and friends, which in turn takes a bigger shape and end up with showing abusive behavior towards humans. According to humanitarian Albert Schweitzer, "anyone who has accustomed himself to regard the life of any living creature as worthless is in danger of arriving also at the idea of worthless human lives". Robert K. Resler, who developed profiles of serial killers for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) stated, "murderers...very often start out by killing and torturing animals as kids". studies have shown that animal cruelty indicates offenders' tendencies towards social violence. Governments of all countries should take immediate action to stop killing animals just for fun - for example Gruesome Act of Mass Killing of Dolphins in Denmark. Serious dolphin hunts in Japan is again another example of inhumane act of animal cruelty. Mass killing of badgers in the UK, Killing of over 800 wars dogs by British Government, Killing dogs to learn how to kill by Peruvian Army are a few examples of the planet's worst inhuman acts ever. If we cannot make justice to animals, we cannot make justice to our own race.

The planet is not only a home for us humans; this is a place for all including animals, birds and plants! The oxygen is free for both humans and animals. Each of them including human beings need loving home and all kinds of nourishment to keep happy and content. Amidst all these negations and denials, The Humane Society of the United States is working with the public on individual animal cruelty cases. They are offering rewards to citizens for giving information on any kind of cruelty to animals and animal fighting resulting conviction. The legal departments of every country should consider cruelty to animals seriously.
What if any dog has allergic reaction to vaccines? There are many pets that have exhibited life-threatening reaction to the first rabies vaccines. Those dogs should not get another shot if they have to live. If such dogs are re-vaccinated with the rabies vaccine they will die.

Dr. Ron Schultz, professor and chair of the Department of Pathobiological Sciences at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine, Madison says that there's no way to break the law, but he is quite optimistic about little changes in the law. However, on the other hand professor Schultz said, "there's absolutely no dependable way to prevent these reactions in some dogs", although an antihistamine an hour before vaccination can prevent such adversity, yet chances are there that such dogs may ultimately suffer a bad ending. Professor Scultz says, "we're trying to get states to recognize rabies titers (or antibodies to determine if the pets remain protected by their previous vaccine) even at three years in lieu of re-vaccination. Titers are a reliable determination. But state regulators don't always ask vaccine experts, and may themselves not be veterinarians. What's more, laws vary from state to state and even within states. There's no standardization."

Candidly speaking, a law without any exception - especially in situations when it comes to questioning a life, is basically a non-sense regulation. If it was me, I would not have vaccinated my dog, making experimentation with his life - one precious life! Even though I clearly understand and would like to abide by the rules and regulations laid by the pet vaccine law for rabies, I would still look for allowance for exceptions to the law. The "titers", as explained by Dr. Ron Schultz is another sensible option, although not a solution!

The Washington State Veterinary Medical Association should advocate for another amendment in the current Rabies Vaccine Law, with allowance for exceptions.

807 war dogs that have served on the front lines with British soldiers have been finally rewarded with the ultimate price for the heroic services rendered. The British Government proudly euthanized the war heroes. This fact was disclosed after government officials had confirmed the figures in the response to Freedom of Information requested by the Daily Mirror.

According to the government officials, the dogs had behavioral problem (too fierce), and could not be kept as pets. With this as an excuse, the British Government have been continuously killing the dogs in mass, in a very cautious and surreptitious way. Most of these dogs had served during the emergencies in Iraq and Afghanistan, when they did not even know that they would have to end their journey shortly after the war.

According to the Ministry of Defense, 20 dogs were put down in the year 2002, 89 dogs were put down in 2003, with the beginning of the Second Gulf War. The number rose up to 95 in the year 2006 and finally 125 in 2009. The dog lovers like us are claiming an answer to the reason behind the government's shamefully insane act. Considering this as a tragic practice, the Labour MP Kerry McCarthy said, "this is shocking. It seems a great shame that animals are destroyed in this way." McCarthy also said, "we need to make sure that every effort is made to find them new homes." According to the government officials retraining turns out to be ineffective and the dogs usually become too dangerous to be kept with new owners.

If the dog becomes too fierce to be re-homed, that's a behavioral issues and the dogs should be, in no ways, blamed for the kind of behavior they exhibit. It is the result of the non-grammatical way of treating and training them through out the service life. It should be considered as their handlers' fault. Why should those innocent lives be claimed?
This post is dedicated to the animals in the animal shelters; I mean those animals that are kept in the facilities that house lost, abandoned and homeless animals that need care and love - probably a little more than what our domestic pooches are getting. My friend Adynah Johnson's company - Mark Batty Publisher (a book publishing company based in Brooklyn, NY), where Adynah is currently working as publicity coordinator, has come up with a highly admirable, 96 pages book called Animal Shelter Portraits.

This photography book is comprised of deeply compassionate and haunting portraits of our furred friends. This book contains stellar photographs of these helpless animals abandoned at kill shelters. Photographer Mark Ross’s compelling photographs capture a snapshot glimpse of our animal companions in their moment of greatest need, acting as a reminder that our decision to adopt them is the difference between life and death. A percentage of proceeds will go to The No Kill Advocacy Center.Aringsburghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06294967059097346197noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6188878197511797395.post-593520633079681482012-03-05T05:23:00.000-08:002012-03-05T05:23:47.510-08:00Bluestreak Cleaner Wrasse : Queenly Beauty Under The Indian OceanHere's a little information about a rare kind of aquarium fish - Bluestreak cleaner wrasse. Description: The Common Cleaner Wrasse is also known as the Bluestreak Cleaner Wrasse Inhabits the coral rich areas of inner lagoons and sub tidal reef flats to seaward reefs and can grow up to 3.9 inches. The Common Cleaner Wrasse has different color patterns; some are dark in color with a silver stripe, while others are white with a dark band and a bright yellow spot at the tail. The Cleaner Wrasse is well known for its cleaning behavior, it establishes a cleaning station. A protogynous hermaphrodite Stays in these stations where other fish come to be cleaned of unwanted parasites and develops a symbiotic relationship with the other reef fish by cleaning them. The cleaner wrasses begin their lives as females of a group of 6-8 cleaner wrasses with one male, the rest are females or juveniles. The dominant female changes its sex when the male dies, an phenomenon known as sequential hermaphroditism. With a most intriguing dance these are amazingly beautiful specimen in an aquarium but like all other Cleaner Wrasse the sustainability in captivity is very less. This is a high maintenance fish. This fish has Medium resilience, minimum population doubling time 1.4 - 4.4 years

Environment: Cleaner Wrasse needs a tank of about 30 gallons or more with abundance of space to hide and swim. It relishes gravel or sand. Water quality should be high with 1.020-1.025, pH 8.1 - 8.4 and Temperature should preferably be 72 - 78° F.

Feeding: Common Cleaner Wrasse is a carnivore fish, it prefers diets consisting of chopped sea foods, brine shrimp, and live black worms. It should be fed at least three times a day.

Behavior: They are peaceful in nature. It usually swims singly, in pairs, and in groups. Some adults solitary and territorial

Compatibility: Cleaner wrasse develops a symbiotic relationship with the other tank mates. Kept together they develop compatibility with the tank inhabitants.Aringsburghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06294967059097346197noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6188878197511797395.post-26477999805574390152012-02-28T08:40:00.001-08:002012-02-28T08:40:00.427-08:00Rare Limlebless Amphibian Discovered:National Geographic titled this news as "Disarming Discovery". Researchers have discovered a not-seen-before limbless amphibians that resemble much a worm or a snake, which they actually aren't. The photograph was shot by S.D. Biju, showing the soil-burrowing, limbless amphibians guarding a brood of eggs. This discovery has opened up a new horizon, as this creature is totally new to the science, according to the studies. This newly found animal represents an entirely new amphibians—family (that was not documented by science so far) and acts as the next very vital chapter in genetics and species. According to findings announced today by the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. this discovery is the next major level up in genus and species in the scientific naming conventions.
It's native is northeastern India. The worm-like creature is one of the 6 potentially new species that belongs to a mysterious group of animals falling under "Caecilians" family - Christened Chikilidae ("Chikila" is the name for caecilians, give by the local tribes). Interestingly, Caecilians' closest relatives live over 7,000 miles away from India, in the tropical Africa, according to a report delivered by the research team.Aringsburghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06294967059097346197noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6188878197511797395.post-87689064992988435722012-02-25T09:34:00.003-08:002012-02-25T09:40:35.040-08:00Brookesia Micra - World's Tiniest Chameleon DiscoveredThe photograph was shot by Frank Glaw; all credit to the photograph of this world's tiniest chameleon breed goes to Mr. Glaw.

Unmatched among the chameleon species, Brookesia micra (B. micra), the planet's smallest chameleon species was discovered on the African island country, Madagascar. The flora and fauna of Madagascar have been evolved into some really weirdest styles, amd structures. Where else on this planet, other than Madagascar, can you find over 70 distinctives types of lemur? It is this place that you can find a variety of Lemur one that calls like a siren of the cops' vehicle. World's largest chameleon h\was discovered here at Madagascar, and yet this is another weirdest off all discoveries - the world’s smallest chameleon, Brookesia micra that has an average length, of little over an inch. With a length of around 2.9 centimeters from snout to tail, the Brookesia micra is considered as the world's tiniest reptile ever discovered. It is so tiny that it can just perch on the tip of a match stick at ease.

According to the researchers this unusually small new species of chameleon indicates the extreme cases dwarfism on this island. Researchers think that the organisms here at this African island country of Madagascar have shrunk in dimension due to lack of resources on this place. According to the study leader Frank Glaw of Germany's Zoological State Collection said in a statement, "the extreme miniaturization of these dwarf reptiles might be accompanied by numerous specializations of the body plan, and this constitutes a promising field for future research."

While discussing more about this amazing creature, Glaw said said that it is not an easy task to find them. He said, for such a tiny reptile, "up into the branches" means just a 4 inches off the ground, shich makes it really unnoticeable. "However, once spotted, the tiny lizards aren't tough to catch," Glaw said. He added, "They are sleeping and you can just pick them up. It's like picking a strawberry. They do not move at all at night."Aringsburghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06294967059097346197noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6188878197511797395.post-84907551621160021772011-12-24T07:15:00.000-08:002011-12-24T07:15:52.586-08:00Merry Christmas and Happy New YearHello All Animal Lovers Across The Globe,
The last week I could manage to scoop some time out of my bustling schedule and got to learn about whether animals can perceive time and whether they can plan or comprehend things they might come across in future. I have made a post on my dog blog regarding how dogs perceive time. This post is all about whether animals are able to learn and plan without having an understanding of time.

Compared to us (human beings) animals have abilities to understand time to lesser extent. Humans have two distinctive abilities to comprehend time, viz. (1) ability to remember the sequence of events that had occurred in the past, and (2) ability to analyst the requirement that we may come across in the future. Experiments on working memory tests on animals have shown that animals also have these two abilities, but not as extensively as humans.

Researchers have experimented on the working memories (short term memories) and reference memories (long term memories) of animals in order to test how do animals remember the sequences of evens. Good news is that the animals performed quite well in those tests, but the researchers concluded that their memory faded out at a fast rate. According to the scientist William Roberts, who had experimented on animal memories, "animals were probably learning going from weakest memory to strongest memory, rather than actually 'learning' or 'remembering' a sequence."

Some of the other scientists who have been working on the similar kind of experiments, found that monkeys and pigeons did fairly good at the reference memories, which is the long term memories, in which they had been tested to check how well they could remember a sequence after a delayed time span between learning and testing. In this regarding Roberts said that they required extensive training session to learn these sequences. Roberts said, "the ability did not come naturally to them." Hence the researchers have concluded that animals would perceive time, but in a different way from humans. Compared to human beings animals have been seen to have a relatively less reliable and less sophisticated memory that help them to remember of sequence of events.

At the same time the researchers concluded that animals do not have good abilities to anticipate future needs, with which the researchers have drawn the conclusion that animals do not have any concept of future. Experiments on rates and pigeons have shown that they "chose a smaller immediate reward over the larger future reward", which directly proved that animals do not have ability to comprehend and plan the future. Another experimentation on primates had been carried out given a choice of "One (1) banana" and "Two (2) bananas". The primates picked the larger quantity - that is two bananas. Now when experiment had been carried out once again with five (5) and ten (10) bananas, in which the primates chose the lesser quantity, that is 5 bananas. Researchers William Roberts concluded that animals try to satisfy their immediate hunger, and do not have the ability to plan for the future.

Now all these experiments and their conclusions seem to be quite convincing. But if animals do not have the ability OR is they have less sophisticated ability to comprehend and plan for the future, why and how do ants tend to collect and gather enough food stuff before they go to hibernation during the winter?Aringsburghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06294967059097346197noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6188878197511797395.post-11926853949390887862011-08-20T04:08:00.000-07:002011-08-26T04:17:10.254-07:00Stop Mass Killing of Badgers - An Open Letter to the UK GovernmentSubject: An appeal to stop unnecessarily killing badgers

The UK Government, as on July 19, 2011, officially announced its strategic drive to controlling the bovine tuberculosis that have been spreading out throughout England, although a recently circulated highlights of the results of public consultation on the government’s Badger Control Policy, 2010 has unfolde the fact thst around 69 percent of respondents were opposed to the killing of badgers. I request the top officials of the UK Government to spare another thought over this issue and re-formulate the strategy of controlling the spread of bovine TB in the country.

This post has been published on the behalf of few millions of people who have raised their voice against the mass slaughter of badgers. According to the declaration made by the Government, 70 % of the total badger population in some specific regions of the country will be killed as an initiative towards controlling bovine TB in cattle. We understand the importance and necessity to fight bovine TB as soon as possible, but the method to reach the goal is yet to be revised.

Already, high-profile voices – including Sir David Attenborough and the Government adviser Lord John Krebs – have taken a part in the debate, saying a cull could "make the situation worse" and be "ineffective".
Should anyone wants to get in touch with Di van, the email has been mentioned below this post. I am really honored to publish my friend Di van's story here in my blog.

Read out the story here....

This is a story of two white Bengal tigers, born at Elmvale Zoo in Canada in 2008.

Angelo and Mich were imported into South Africa in December 2008 as four month old cubs. They were originally destined for a wildlife breeding facility but due to a permit problem ended up on loan to Jukani Wildlife Predator Park in Mossel Bay, a coastal town in the south of the country. Jukani is recognised by South African authorities as a bona fide zoological facility.

In July 2009 Angelo, the male, was diagnosed by a wildlife specialist veterinarian with Progressive Retinal Atrophy, a genetic transferable and incurable disease which would leave him permanently blind.

When the owner of the tigers was advised of Angelo’s plight his response was that Jukani should either buy the animals at Rs. 250 000 per animal (approximately USD 36 000 each) or he would sell them on. This owner has previously been exposed on national television for the supplying of lions to canned hunting operators and also for the slaughtering of lions to sell their bones and body parts to the traditional Chinese medicine market. It is a sad fact, but Angelo is worth more dead than alive.

Fortunately, Jukani has a written agreement which gives them first option to purchase Angelo and Mich at an agreed market related price. They have chosen to exercise that right as they are fearful of the fate that might await the tigers should they be removed from their care.

All tiger sub species are protected under CITES 1 regulations and the hunting of captive or wild tigers is banned internationally. With Angelo going blind our local authorities may grant permission to euthanize him by way of a canned or trophy hunt. South Africa has a dismal animal rights record and the murder of a protected animal in a canned hunt could easily slip through the cracks.

Angelo is a 200 Kg happy and playful boy. He is housed with Mich in a large enclosure and she is becoming his “eyes”. His neighbors are 2 white lions, Tsau and Tendile, and they help him out as well. He has a wonderful support team at Jukani headed by Jurg and Karen Olsen, whose passion for large (and small) cats is absolutely amazing and he has a vet whom he knows and trusts. Angelo has a right to live out his life in peace - his medical condition is the result of inbreeding motivated by greed. As long as his specific needs are taken care of and his caretakers, his enclosure and his companion, Mich, do not alter, there is no reason why he cannot be content. All he is asking for is a chance for him and Mich to live.

A non profit company has been registered to raise funds for Angelo and Mich. A very successful golf day was recently held in Cape Town and a dinner with a sports memorabilia auction is planned for later on this month . All the sports memorabilia is being donated to the cause.
